We must never forget the Holocaust or weaken in our resolve to prevent such horrors from recurring. The Holocaust stands as a terrible illustration of the depths which human barbarity can reach. Focusing on the lessons to be drawn from the Holocaust in the fields of education, remembrance and research is a timely and praiseworthy initiative which must be of profound interest to all concerned with human rights.

The Holocaust has particular relevance for preparations for the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance which will be held next year in South Africa. Education is the primary preventive weapon against racism. I strongly believe that we cannot educate properly or plan effective strategies to combat the evils of racism and xenophobia - still such potent forces in all societies - unless we learn lessons from the past.

The outcome of your discussions will be a valuable contribution to the task we share: to stop massive human rights violations.
