Madeleine Rees


Madeleine Rees was educated at the University of Wales, has a BA honours degree in History and Post Graduate qualification in Education. She worked as teacher in various countries, mainly in Latin America and in the UK before re-qualifying as a lawyer in 1989. From 1989 to 1997 she was a practising lawyer in Britain. Her speciality was in discrimination law, and public and administrative law. She worked for both the Commission for Racial Equality and the Equal Opportunities Commission mainly on developing strategies to establish rights under domestic law through the identification of test cases. During the conflict in BiH she helped to set up a Lawyers NGO, the aim of which was to assist the work of the ICTY through the submission of amicus briefs and to work with womens NGO’s in Bosnia. She worked in Bosnia from 1997 at the office of the Ombudsperson; At present Head of the UNHCHR office in Sarajevo. She represents the Office of the High Commissioner on trafficking; Member of the expert co-ordination group of the Stability Pact.
