POL POT

Pol Pot was born “Saloth Sar” on January 25, 1925, the Year of the Ox, in Prek Sbou Village, Stung Sen District, Kampong Thom Province, in what would later become Region 43 of the Northern Zone of Democratic Kampuchea. He used many other names during his life, including “Comrade Pol,” Comrade Secretary, Angkar, Hai, Brother Number One, Brother 87, Committee 870 and Comrade Pouk.

Pol Pot's father was Phem Saloth and his mother was Duk Nem. He has five siblings. His first wife was Khieu Thirith's older sister Kheiu Ponnary, thus making he and Ieng Sary brothers-in-law.

On October 9, 1975, the Standing Committee placed Pol Pot in charge of military affairs and the economy. On March 30, 1976, he was appointed as First Minister (Prime Minister) of Democratic Kampuchea.
